Senior Dogs are Fully Grown and Mature = you know what you’re getting yourself into!
How awesome is it to have a dog that is well-mannered and in their prime from their previous life experience? Even through heartache they may have encountered in the past, dogs have a way of forgiving, forgetting and living in the present. Senior Dogs have been loved before, and can truly appreciate what that feels like. So if you give your love to a senior dog, you can be sure they will devote the rest of their life to loving you back!
This is what it is to Adopt a Senior Dog.
Senior dogs…
- are polite and respectful in their older age
- have wisdom from their years of ‘dogging’
- are so grateful to be included and be part of a family
- are more than happy to just chill by your side – forever loyal
- lower your stress level by being their ever so calm and gentle selves
The fact is that senior dogs often spend the longest amount of time at a shelter before being adopted (surveys show that older dogs may wait four times as long as younger dogs to be adopted), and sadly many do not get adopted at all. Due to the low adoption rates for senior dogs, old dogs have higher euthanasia rates or often live out their lives in a shelter. Ending up in a shelter isn’t the fault of an older dog of course. Some common reasons why adult or senior dogs are given up include the death of their family member, a health issue, a move in which they cannot be taken, a change in a family dynamic, the loss of a job or a change in a work schedule, and for some, they do not have to time to properly care for a dog. There are many situations in a dog’s life that are out of their control, and they are given up on by their human. This is where you come in, YOU can make the world of difference in a senior dog’s life by giving them a second chance to love – and live again!
