Reason #2 Adopt a senior dog!
Seniors are Calmer and Less Demanding than younger dogs
Whether you’re adopting or somehow welcoming a senior dog into your home, chances are you’re in for a much more relaxed experience than if it was a puppy or other higher-energy dog.
Imagine if you will, being able to…
- Sleep in
- Cuddle quietly and calmly
- Have a flexible exercise routine
- Take long naps with your pup
- Spend less time training and monitoring
The list would go on but you get the drift, having a senior dog is the ultimate in chill!
Of course puppies have their own charm, and it may not all be smooth sailing in the beginning, especially if you’ve adopted a senior dog that has been abandoned or abused, but you’ll get through these potentially difficult times together. It takes a special person to open your heart to an older dog, but the rewards are immense. Anyone that has had the pleasure can attest to the incredible love and loyalty that only a senior dog can shower upon you!
When you bring a rescue dog home, here are some tips to help them settle in:
- Vet Check. Depending on the prior circumstances in which your dog was living, you may want to err on the side of caution and get a clean bill of health for your new best friend.
- Give them some time, they’ll come around. Don’t push or rush them to respond to you and the unfamiliar surroundings. Let them set the pace in their new safe environment. Let them to come to you on their own terms.
- Prepare their accoutrements: collar, leash, bowls, toys, food, treats, bedding and name tag with phone number. You’ll want to make sure your new family member is off to a great start by having all the essentials at the ready!
- Set up a daily routine for meals and exercise. Be sure to introduce any new food slowly, while maintaining a set schedule for feeding and exercise requirements. A regular meal and walkie time will get them accustomed to a routine and put them at ease.
- Most of all, be patient and understanding. Put yourself in their shoes, and you’re guaranteed to be more compassionate and gentle with your senior. Give them the respect these dignified old timers deserve.
